Nigerian Girls Scattered Abroad As Sex Slaves

Funding, weak legislation and poor law enforcement are some of the issues hindering the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria. A new report by the United States Department of State revealed that while the Nigerian government has made efforts in eliminating trafficking in persons, there were a number of standards yet to be complied with. The report says "In 2012, a total number of 60 girls aged 16-25 were rescued from slave masters in Ghana and Ivory Coast.

VISITORS from India, Pakistan, Nigeria and other “high risk” countries in Asia and Africa will be forced to pay a £3,000 cash bond before they can enter Britain. From November, a pilot scheme will target visitors from seven countries who will have to pay the government a form of cash guarantee or deposit to deter immigration abuse.

A stray bullet fired by a Customs officer identified as Ade, has killed a middle aged woman in a commuter bus. The tragedy occurred when the Customs officer tried to intercept a suspected smuggler around Ilashe area of Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria.
The victim, a mother of five children identified as Fausat Bankole, sold fruits and vegetables and was on her way to Ihunbo market when she was killed.

What could have amounted to another major air disaster in the country was averted on Friday evening when an Arik aircraft aborted landing at Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital barely about 500 meters from the tarmac due to power cut at the airport. The sudden power outage forced the pilot to hurriedly terminate his landing plan and fly back to the sky where it hovered for about 30 minutes before flying back to Abuja because the person to turn on the alternative power source was not available. The passengers on Arik Flight W3 533, including the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi odinkalu, and some unnamed federal lawmakers, said to be heading to Uyo for a retreat.

While federal forces have secured the north eastern parts of the country from insurgents, armed attacks are popping up in the North West.More than 32 persons have been reported killed after heavily armed gunmen attacked a village in Zamfara State in the early hours of Tuesday. Reports say the gunmen numbering over 100 on motorcycles hit Kizara village in Tsafe Local Government Area. According to an eyewitness, the gunmen first opened fire from a hill overlooking the village before setting several houses and shops on fire.

Information reaching OYA MAG this morning has it that an Obafemi Awolowo University student who gave birth to a baby inside her hostel toilet attempted to flush the innocent new born.
The alleged culprit we gathered is one Oyin, a 400 level student of the Department of Electrical Electronics who resides in the school’s “Big Girls” hostel, Moremi Hall Block B, Room 103.
The ugly incident happened early this morning when she was caught by a cleaner who heard the baby’s cries.

CBN reiterates plan to phase out polymer notes

Lagos – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday reiterated its decision to change some naira notes from polymer to paper. Mr Ugochukwu Okoroafor, Head of Corporate Communications Department of CBN, however, in Lagos said that the change would be gradual. The Deputy Governor of CBN, Mr Tunde Lemo, on April 2013, in Washington, said there were plans to withdraw the polymer notes. Okoroafor said that there was no fixed date for the change, but the apex bank would complete the phase-out before December 2013.

Lagos literally stood still, yesterday, as the President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, who died last Saturday aged 96, was buried at the Vaults and Garden Cemetery, Ikoyi, amidst eulogies. Late Alhaja Mogaji was the mother of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Lagos State governor and national leader of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.
Tinubu, who recalled his mother’s last moments, said: “On Saturday afternoon, she had her lunch. After that, she took her drugs and rested.

JTF Discovers More Weapons In Hezbollah Suspect’s Residence In Kano

Joint security forces in Kano state, north-west Nigeria says it has discovered another cooler buried under a wardrobe at the same Lebanese house at No. 3 Gaya Road, where a large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered last week suspected to be that of Hezbollah Terrorists organization.

A press statement by the JTF spokesperson, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, said the cooler contained 80 indicators, 5 PPK pistols, 334 rounds of 7.62mm special, 9 magazines, 4 pistol silencers, hand grenades caps, 4 explosive fuses and 2 explosive device.

Iweha stressed that while the house was under 24 hour JTF surveillance, the military will continue to count on the support and cooperation of the good people of Kano state. “In the effective discharge of our duty, we want to assure you of our utmost commitment in ensuring that peace and atmosphere suitable for business continue to prevail.”

Meanwhile, all effort to speak with Mr. Taher, the owner of the house and owner of the Taher Guest Palace in Kano was not successful as he told Channels Television that he has been advised on not talk to the press.
For now, Mr. Taher appeared free but probably under surveillance by security operatives.

An Abia State High Court has sentenced a banker, Mr. Theophilus Ajakaiye, to death by hanging for killing his wife, Theodora. The convict allegedly murdered his wife on October 12, 2009 at Azumini Ndoki in the Ukwa Judicial Division of Abia. The charge read, “The accused person is charged with one-count of murder contrary to Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Vol. 11, Cap. 30 Laws of Eastern Nigeria, 1963, applicable in Abia State.”

Veteran musician Fatai Rolling Dollar seriously ill

Nigeria’s oldest practicing musician, Fatai Rolling Dollar is seriously sick and in hospital. The 85 year old was rushed to the hospital by his wife more than a week ago where he still remains. Family sources say his condition was so bad that he couldn’t move his legs but is getting better.
